Have you been invited to a costume party with a western theme but have nothing to wear? Don’t fret just yet! There are a lot of western and cowboy costumes you can choose from. Some of the most popular costumes include the cowboy or cowgirl costume, the Indian costume, the sheriff costume and the saloon girl costume.

Cowboy Costumes or Cowgirl Costumes?
The cowboy costume or cowgirl costume is the classic outfit for any party with a western theme. For men, wear matching western-style shirts and pants to make you look like a cowboy. For women, you can wear a western-style blouse with a matching skirt. For a more updated cowboy or cowgirl look, you can just wear a checkered polo top and a pair of denim jeans. You may also want to thrown in a cowboy vest with tassels. Finish the outfit with standard cowboy boots.

When wearing a cowboy costume or cowgirl costume, never forget the accessories. Appear more realistic by wearing a cowboy hat. Aside from that, you also need a leather belt with a solid, silver buckle. For a more fancy look, women can opt for leather belts with rhinestone buckles instead. Also, get a red tea towel and turn it into a neckerchief. You can also carry a lasso for that authentic Western look.

Indian Costumes
Indian costumes are also very popular in western theme parties. For men, a sleeveless leather top in brown with matching leather pants can be worn. For women, think Pocahontas – wear a sleeveless leather blouse and matching short skirt. For both men and women, wear some native slippers to complete your costume. Also put on a band around your head, where you can attach one feather to it. Accessorize with beaded necklaces, bracelets, arm bands and moccasins. You can also use face paint or make-up to draw some lines on your face, and body paint or henna to create some tattoos that look genuine.

Sheriff Costumes
Another popular western costume is the sheriff costume. The sheriff costume is actually quite similar to the cowboy costume. Wear a western-style shirt, fringed leather pants and a cowboy hat. A more contemporary approach is to wear a leather jacket, in black or brown, and a pair of denim jeans. The most important thing about the sheriff costume is the badge, which is attached to the sheriff’s jacket. You can buy a badge at the local costume shop or even a toy store. Using some foil, you can even make your own sheriff’s badge. Don’t forget to put on a holster where you can place a fake handgun in, to show everyone who’s in charge.

Saloon Girl Costumes
For a sexier look, you can choose to wear a saloon girl costume. Wear a long-sleeved checkered top, but make it more revealing by opening some of the top buttons. Match this with either a pair of fitted denims or a mini-skirt. Finish it off with a pair of sexy pointed cowboy boots. To make it look more realistic, you can even carry pitchers or mugs of beer around!

A western-themed party is perfect for both men and women, no matter how young or old you are. This is why western costume parties are still one of the most popular kinds of costume parties for all ages. Go crazy in the Wild, Wild West with these great western costume ideas!

Why Cowboy Costumes Are Winners!

Every year at the end of October kids and adults alike get dressed up in costumes and try to scare neighbors, friends and relatives. It’s called Halloween and when you combine candy, spooky costumes and fun you’ve got a holiday worth celebrating. Here are some of my favorite costume ideas from years past.

The cowboy and particularly the sheriff has always been a favorite among younger boys. It was popular when I was a kid and every year I still see my fair share of young cowboys, pretending that they are the good guys.

What the cowboy costume is to little boys, the princess costume is to little girls. Little girls love to get dressed up, the more sparkles the better. Don’t forget the tiara. Some little girls also like to have a scepter or wand to complete the costume.

Pirates have been popular forever and with the Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies having had such success, every little boy, and my little girl, wants to be captain Jack Sparrow. Don’t forget the other popular pirate related characters like Captain Hook and Peter Pan.

The witch and princess witch are two costumes that work very well. This all depends on your little girl, some want to be scary, others want to be a friendly witch. The pretty witch has the hat, but not the nose and the clothes have some lighter colors in them.

The devil is a controversial Halloween costume. I know some parents who are so against this costume that it causes them to ignore Halloween all together. To these people I say “get a grip”. It’s just pretend. Anyway, the devil, all in red with a tail and horns is one of the coolest kid costumes around.

The mummy costume, like pirates has seen a revival lately. This is mostly because of the success of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns movies. It’s an easy costume to do and can be pretty creepy in the dark.

I’m going to group all of the super hero’s together. Spider-Man should be big this year, as should Superman. Just don’t forget the Hulk, Wonder-Woman and Batman. All are favourites almost every year.

Star Wars seems to be it’s own genre of Halloween costume. So many characters in the movies translate well into costumes. Chewy is always fun. When I was a kid it was Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia and of course Darth Vader and storm troopers. Nowadays it’s Anakin and anyone else in the Jedi order and the Sith or of course Padme for the girls.

For scary costumes, look to the movies. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare of Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If there aren’t enough scary examples in those, then you’re not looking hard enough.

When I was in university I needed a costume for a Halloween party. After much searching, my sister said that she would make me one and we started looking through patterns. I found Sylvester the cat. This was my personal favourite costumer of all time. It was about 300 degrees inside, but it was a big hit at the party. The next year she made me a shark, not quite as good, but still pretty cool. A couple of years after that my girlfriend decided she wanted to be Tweety. I found Sylvester again and we went to a party as Sylvester and Tweety. Her big old yellow bird head made her about a foot taller than me. It was probably our best Halloween party ever, the costumes made it.
